Rhino Calf Born to Rescued Orphan, a Celebration of Conservation Efforts in SA

The Rhino Orphanage is celebrating the birth of a calf; the reason it is so special, is because mom Faith was rescued as an orphan and is today, free again.
South African rhinos are so precious and yet, they are targeted for their horns. Often in the act of poaching, young calf’s are left orphaned and in need of care. The Rhino Orphanage has dedicated its time to raising and rehabilitating these orphans before releasing them into the wild.
The Rhino Orphanage has slowly been releasing its mature orphans and many are now old enough to start reproducing. We are seeing more stories like this regularly and it is truly warming our hearts!
The team shared the happy update of a new calf being welcomed into the world recently. This follows on the heels of a 1st birthday celebration for another calf.
“Recently celebrating the 1st Birthday of Montle’s calf we have received the incredible news of a second calf born to one of the orphans we have raised.
Faith has given birth to a beautiful baby boy! Although mom was really confused by the baby after he was born, the monitoring team kept close watch and have reported the baby drinking well. Faith’s life-long companion, Lunga, and another orphan, Matthew, is by her side too, so the monitoring team will continuously keep close watch on the situation to ensure that they present no danger to the baby.
It is such a privilege to witness the resilience of the rhino orphans, and the incredible instincts of especially the females, now taking care of little ones themselves, leaves us in awe. It is nothing short of amazing.”

Arrie van Deventer founded the Rhino Orphanage in 2012. The orphanage takes in young rhinos, rehabilitates them and then releases them back into the wild when they are ready. The facility became the World’s first rhino orphanage and has inspired many others to form since then.
Since 2012, they have saved countless young rhinos and returned them back to the wild. The team dedicated themselves entirely to the cause, working day and night to be there for the scared young souls.
The orphanage does incredible work and the orphans they save, go on to become beautiful adults. You can follow the stories via Facebook.
