About a million animals are killed on roads every day in the U.S., and globally that number is much higher.


Designing roads with wildlife in mind is indeed an important concept, and it has gained recognition as a vital aspect of transportation and environmental planning. The impact of roads on wildlife populations is a growing concern, and addressing this issue is crucial for the conservation of biodiversity and the safety of both humans and animals. Ben Goldfarb’s statement underscores the urgency of addressing road ecology and its impact on our planet.

There are several strategies and considerations when designing roads with wildlife in mind:

  1. Wildlife Crossings: Creating wildlife corridors and crossings can help animals safely navigate across roads. These can include underpasses, overpasses, culverts, and tunnels designed to accommodate different species’ needs.

This proactive approach is essential for minimizing the negative impacts of roads on ecosystems and biodiversity.

However, as highlighted by Ben Goldfarb, wildlife crossings are just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to addressing the multifaceted issues that roads present.
