The world’s largest wind turbine set a new electricity generation record – during a typhoon

The world’s largest offshore wind turbine has set a new world record for electricity generation by an individual wind turbine in a 24-hour period.

Goldwind’s GWH252-16MW intelligent wind turbine setting a new world record for electricity generation by an individual wind turbine in a 24-hour period. With a rotor diameter of 252 meters, a large swept area, and a hub height of 146 meters, this wind turbine can capture a substantial amount of wind energy, especially in locations with strong and consistent winds, such as offshore environments. Offshore wind farms have been playing a crucial role in expanding renewable energy capacity and reducing carbon emissions, and innovations like this record-setting turbine contribute to their effectiveness.

The continued development and deployment of such advanced wind turbines are essential for increasing the overall capacity and reliability of renewable energy sources, which are vital in the global effort to combat climate change and transition to more sustainable energy systems.

The 16 MW wind turbine was installed in June at the Zhangpu Liuao Phase 2 offshore wind farm in the southeastern Fujian Province and came online on July 19.

It’s truly impressive to hear about its resilience in the face of Typhoon Haikui, with wind speeds of around 85 km/h (53 mph) and a peak of 23.56 meters per second.

The fact that this wind turbine not only set a record for electricity generation but also demonstrated its ability to withstand extreme weather conditions like a typhoon is a testament to the engineering and design advancements in the field of wind energy. Such developments are crucial for the continued growth of offshore wind farms, as they ensure reliability and safety in challenging environmental conditions.

China has been making significant investments in renewable energy, including wind power, to reduce its carbon footprint and increase its reliance on clean energy sources. Innovations like the one seen at the Zhangpu Liuao Phase 2 offshore wind farm play a vital role in achieving these goals and expanding the global renewable energy industry.

Setting a new world record for electricity generation by an individual wind turbine in a single-day period, with 384.1 megawatt-hours of power, is a remarkable achievement. This amount of electricity can indeed power a substantial number of homes, nearly 170,000, highlighting the potential impact of such innovative technology on providing clean energy to communities.

It’s worth noting that competition and advancements in wind turbine technology continue to drive progress in the renewable energy sector. The fact that this record was set shortly after the previous record demonstrates the rapid pace of innovation in the industry, which is promising for the future of clean energy production and sustainability.
