In 2023, Florida experienced an exceptional nesting season for green sea turtles, breaking previous records, but concerns about skewed sex ratios in recent hatchlings due to rising sand temperatures highlight ongoing challenges in sea turtle conservation.


Green sea turtles had an exceptional nesting season on Florida’s beaches in 2023, with volunteers counting more than 74,300 nests, according to preliminary data. That beats the previous record, from 2017, by a staggering 40 percent.

The increase in the number of nests, surpassing the previous record from 2017 by 40 percent, is indeed a remarkable and welcome surprise. This news is a positive sign for the conservation of these endangered species.

The efforts of volunteers and organizations like the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission play a crucial role in monitoring and protecting sea turtles and their nesting habitats. The continued counting of nests through October 31 is essential for gathering comprehensive data and ensuring that these positive trends are sustained.
